This burly Sierra Juniper, also known as Western Juniper, ekes out an existence in the exposed granite ridges of the Eastern Sierra Nevada. The roots of this natural bonsai extend through the crevices in the rock, anchoring it to sites where lack of soil, extreme exposure to blizzards, and summer drought do not allow other conifers to survive.
